What a game!
The Washington Nationals stunned the Milwaukee Brewers with a 4-3 victory in the National League Wild Card Game. The Nationals trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth and Juan Soto managed a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth that scored three runs with assistance from an outfield error. The Nationals advance to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in one of the National League Divisional Series matchups.
The Brewers pounced on Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals early, and looked like they might secure the road upset. Milwaukee came out aggressive against Nationals starter Max Scherzer. Yasmani Grandal was second in the NL in walks this season, and he came out swinging in the first inning. He hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and that looked like it might be enough to get the Brew Crew the victory.
The Nationals could not get anything going aside from a Trea Turner home run — until the eighth inning. After Victor Robles struck out to open the inning, pinch hitter Michael Taylor was hit by pitch — although there’s an argument to be made the ball hit his bat first. After Trea Turner struck out swinging, franchise hero Ryan Zimmerman managed a broken bat single to send Taylor to third. Anthony Rendon walked, and then Soto managed a single to right field for the go-ahead runs. He was thrown out trying to advance to third, but it ended up not mattering.
The Nationals were favorites in this game, and managed the money line victory. If you took the Brewers at +1.5 on the run line you did manage that victory. It was a tough money line loss for Brewers bettors, but one heck of a ball game.
