Jon Hilliman, Elijhaa Penny status update, 7:31 p.m.

The New York Giants released their inactives, and with it they announced that Jon Hilliman will start in place of Saquon Barkley. The Giants ruled Barkley and Wayne Gallman out on Wednesday. Elijhaa Penny will play behind Hilliman and likely will see plenty of playing time as well. Of course, given that the Patriots could turn this thing into a blowout, game script might not favor the ground game. But, if the Giants want to keep this thing close early, they’ll look to control the clock.

The New York Giants face the New England Patriots in Week 6, and injuries leave them significantly short-handed for Thursday Night Football. Evan Engram, Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard, and Wayne Gallman are all sidelined for the game due to various ailments.

Barkley is recovering from his Week 3 high ankle sprain while Gallman suffered a concussion in Week 5. Barkley was a limited participant in practice Monday through Wednesday, while Gallman did not participate at all. In their place, rookie Jon Hilliman and third-year back Elijhaa Penny are expected to split work.

Last week, Hilliman rushed nine times for 20 yards and caught one pass for four yards, while Penny had three rushes for 15 yards and one reception for nine yards. The previous week, Hilliman had ten rushes for 33 yards, while Penny had three rushes for 12 yards.

This is a tough situation for a couple reasons. The Patriots are likely to hammer the Giants, which could flip the game script on this one to a pass heavy attack. Additionally, we don’t know how the game plan will sort things out between Hilliman and Penny. Hilliman ended up with 20 more snaps last week (44 to 24), and the previous week he out-snapped Penny 27-13. That would suggest Hilliman is the one-week lottery ticket to buy. He’s useful if you’re in a deeper league or injuries and/or byes are a big problem.
