The Steelers are in bad shape right now. Not only are they 1-4 and without a first round pick for the 2020 NFL Draft, but they are down to their third string quarterback. Mason Rudolph was showing real signs of growth and improvement before sustaining a concussion against the Ravens. He will not be back prior to Week 6, meaning that Devlin Hodges will start. Hodges is an undrafted free agent out of Samford, who completed 70.5% of his passes and averaged 7.8 yards per attempt in his final season. He likely will not be able to do much to help the 25th-ranked offense in yards per play. If the Steelers are going to compete or win this contest, it will have to be on the back of their seventh-ranked defense according to Football Outsiders DVOA.

Meanwhile, the Chargers have been one of the biggest disappointments of the year. They are 2-3 with a measly +9 point differential. The defense desperately misses safety Derwin James, who was placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the season. The Chargers are 28th in defensive DVOA without their star playmaker. On offense, they have suffered through multiple injuries, and only recently got Melvin Gordon back from his holdout. Scoring just 13 points at home against Denver doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that their issues are a mirage. Whoever loses this game is in a massive hole in terms of playoff contention. It is very likely that team is, for all intents and purposes, eliminated.
