Gleyber Torres continued his torrid October and Masahiro Tanaka rolled through six innings as the New York Yankees took Game 1 over the Houston Astros by a final score of 7-0. Game 2 is set for Sunday at 8:08 p.m. on FOX. Justin Verlander will take the hill for the Astros while James Paxton will pitch for the Yankees.
Torres had his best game of what has been a strong October. He went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, and now has an October slash line of .471/.500/1.059. Giancarlo Stanton and Gio Urshela each added a solo home run, and it was more than enough support for Tanaka. He went six innings and gave up one hit and one walk while striking out five. Three Yankees relievers combined to give up two hits and one walk as the Astros simply could not get anything going on offense.
Zack Greinke certainly wasn’t awful, and it was an improvement on his six-run effort against Tampa Bay in the ALDS. He faced the minimum through three, giving up only an infield single. Torres doubled in a run in the fourth, and then homered along with Stanton in the sixth. The Yankees would add four more runs, but it was too late.
The Astros best opportunity came in the seventh inning when Adam Ottavino came on in relief. Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve singled with one out, but Alex Bregman hit into a double play to end the threat.
