The New England Patriots made a surprising roster move on Wednesday, placing kicker Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve, according to Patriots reporter Jim McBride. The Patriots are working on kickers on Wednesday as they prepared for their Week 5 matchup against Washington.
The news is rather shocking given Gostkowski’s longevity in the league. He entered the NFL in 2006, and other than eight games in 2010 had never missed a game. He had struggled with extra points this season, missing missing four of his 15 attempts. While we await further word on the injury, it’s easy to consider this being a potential reason for those struggles.
Fantasy football kickers to add off the waiver wire
Waiver wire content is valuable reading, but usually there is not much on kickers. Gostkowski has been one of the first kickers off the board for years, so one owner in every league is looking for a new kicker for Week 5. Looking through the list of kickers owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN fantasy football leagues, here are arguably the top five names to consider:
Matt Gay, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (23.2 percent) @ Saints
Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers (48.5 percent) @ Cowboys
Chris Boswell, Pittsburgh Steelers (12.1 percent) @ Ravens
Jake Elliott, Philadelphia Eagles (46.7 percent) vs. Jets
Randy Bullock, Cincinnati Bengals (0.5 percent) vs. Cardinals
