The Atlanta Falcons have lost backup running back Ito Smith to a head injury, according to Tiffany Blackmon. He is questionable to return while the evaluation happens in the second quarter. The Falcons trail 10-3 while the evaluation takes place. Smith had one carry for seven yards at the time of the injury.
There had been thought that Smith might emerge as a serious complementary option to Devonta Freeman following Tevin Coleman’s departure in free agency. Smith has gotten work as the backup, but Freeman has not been pushed quite like some expected. Smith has been more effective on the ground, averaging 4.7 yards per carry, while Freeman has averaged 3.9.
Kenjon Barner will see some work with Smith out, but Freeman will be the go to guy without much pushing behind him.
