The New England Patriots thumped the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, and less than 12 hours later have added some significant wide receiver depth. The team is trading a second round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for Mohamed Sanu, per Adam Schefter.
Sanu has 33 receptions for 313 yards and one touchdown in his eight season in the NFL. He spent his first four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals before signing a five year contract with the Falcons in 2016.
The Patriots have dealt with various issues at the wide receiver position all season. They signed Antonio Brown after the Raiders released him, but that went south. Josh Gordon has been a solid addition but is currently dealing with a knee injury. Phillip Dorsett has dealt with a hamstring injury, but did make it back for MNF where hec aught three targets for 46 yards and a touchdown. Jakobi Meyers has also been stepping up lately, finishing MNF with five receptions for 47 yards.
Fantasy football analysis, Patriots WR Mohamed Sanu
This is a big addition for the Patriots, but it raises some questions behind Julian Edelman. Thus far, Edelman has been the must start, and even he has to deal with running back James White being a regular leader in receptions for the team. Sanu’s stock increases, but this is arguably a better regular football move than fantasy football move. Tom Brady benefits, but it’s not like people were regularly sitting him.
The Patriots host a shaky Cleveland Browns team in Week 8. It’s hard to say right now who is a must start after Edelman this weekend. Sanu is owned in 49 percent of ESPN leagues, so there’s a decent chance he’s available in your leagues. He’s worth a speculative add, but temper expectations for the time being.
