Well, the Mohamed Sanu trade makes a whole lot more sense now. A day after adding the wide receiver, the New England Patriots placed Josh Gordon on injured reserve due to a knee injury, per Field Yates.
Gordon injured his knee in Week 6 against the New York Giants and was inactive on Monday against the Jets. It was less than 12 hours after the game that the reports circulated the team was trading a draft pick to the Falcons for Sanu.
Fantasy football analysis, Patriots wide receivers
Edelman, Sanu, and Phillip Dorsett are the Patriots top three receivers depending on who’s healthy at the time. Dorsett is returning from injury, so it will be interesting to see who between him and Sanu grabs a firm hold opposite Edelman. Jakobi Meyers has looked good in recent weeks and has been building chemistry with Tom Brady. Gordon’s season-ending injury opens the door for him to build on the past two weeks in which he has had nine receptions for 101 yards. He’s not quite a regular fantasy option, but he’s worth monitoring and potentially stashing if you have a roster spot.
Sanu had moderate fantasy value in Atlanta, but he becomes a big option in New England opposite Edelman. I suspect he develops into a regular WR2 option for fantasy owners the rest of the season.
