Falcons add QB to active roster, raises more questions about Matt Ryan

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is questionable for Sunday with a sprained ankle. Head coach Dan Quinn said he’s a game-time decision, and the team has signed another quarterback for Week 8. We break down the fantasy football implications.

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign quarterback Danny Etling off their practice squad by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, according to reporter Adam Caplan. In getting the move in by the close of Saturday business, the Falcons will ensure Etling is eligible to play on Sunday. This is notable because of Matt Ryan’s ankle injury.

Ryan sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He sat out Wednesday and Thursday practice, and was a limited participant on Friday. Head coach Dan Quinn told the media Ryan was questionable and would be a game-time decision.

The team could still be holding out hope Ryan can play on Sunday, but signing Etling suggests they are not entirely optimistic. If Ryan does not play, Matt Schaub will get the start.

Fantasy football analysis, Falcons QB Matt Ryan

There’s a chance Ryan still plays, but fantasy owners should start operating under the assumption he sits against the Seattle Seahawks. Schaub represents a downgrade, from Ryan, but Julio Jones and Austin Hooper remain must starts. The Seahawks have given up the eighth fewest fantasy points to wide receivers, so Calvin Ridley is not a must start at this point. He’s not a bad start, but it will come down to your other options. Schaub is not someone you want to be starting in fantasy outside of deeper leagues.
