The coaching matchup decides my Week 5 MNF pick against the spread

The 49ers are 4.5-point favorites against the Browns in Week 5 Monday Night Football. We break down the matchup and give our pick against the spread and point total choice.

The Cleveland Browns travel to the Bay Area to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5 Monday Night Football. The 49ers are one of two remaining undefeated teams, while the Browns are as up and down as they come through the first quarter of the season.

The 49ers are a 4.5-point favorite in this one, and DraftKings Sportsbook has the point total at 47. The 49ers are 3-0 straight up, 2-1 against the spread, and have gone under the point total in two of three games. The Browns are 2-2 SU and ATS, and have split the over and under.

Both teams are dealing with some notable injuries heading into game day. The 49ers will be without left tackle Joe Staley and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, while running back Tevin Coleman and edge rusher Dee Ford are listed as questionable. Both Coleman and Ford are expected to play. Meanwhile, the Browns will likely be without cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams. Both are listed as questionable and neither is expected to play.

Monday Night Football pick against the spread

I’m taking the 49ers -4.5 and the over in this one. My point spread decision comes down to Kyle Shanahan vs. Freddie Kitchens. The coaching matchup seems to decidedly favor the 49ers, particularly on offense. The 49ers offense is heating up and adding Tevin Coleman to the mix should only further improve it.

I’m also a big fan of the 49ers defense (worth noting I am a 49ers fan, so adjust your expectations accordingly). They entered Week 5 second in defensive efficiency, and while their bye means they have only played three games, it’s been an impressive effort to date. I think we see the pass rush give Baker Mayfield a tough time most of the evening.

The 49ers are sending out a relatively fresh face at cornerback in Emmanuel Moseley, and it’s safe to say the Browns will challenge him. I’d love to take the under on this one, but Moseley and whomever else is back there opposite Richard Sherman could easily get beaten on a blown coverage here or there and this game turns into a bit of a shootout.
