Quarterbacks to consider off waivers with Matthew Stafford ruled out with injury

We break down the best options if you are scrambling amidst news Matthew Stafford is out with a hip and back injury.

The Detroit Lions will not have quarterback Matthew Stafford available in Week 10 after an MRI revealed damage to his back that would not clear up by Sunday, according to Ian Rapoport. The damage involves fractured bones, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jeff Driskel will get the start in his place, but if you are a Stafford owner, Driskel is not the answer to who you should start in his place. Driskel won’t necessarily be awful, but there are just too many question marks and not enough answers to justify starting him in anything but deep two-quarterback leagues.

Fantasy football waiver wire: Quarterbacks

There are still some notable options available on the waiver wire in a majority of leagues. At ESPN, quarterbacks available in more than 50 percent of leagues include Colts QB Brian Hoyer, Giants QB Daniel Jones, Titans QB Ryan Tannehill, Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky, Panthers QB Kyle Allen, Steelers QB Mason Rudolph, Jets QB Sam Darnold, Bengals QB Ryan Finley, and Browns QB Baker Mayfield.

From that group, Hoyer is the best option, followed by Tannehill. Hoyer and the Colts face an abysmal Dolphins team, and with Jacoby Brissett downgraded to out on Saturday, Hoyer is locked in as the starter. He does not have Brissett’s ceiling, but he’s got a sizable floor — and this matchup only boosts it.

Meanwhile, Tannehill and the Titans host a shaky Chiefs defense. He’s probably got a slightly higher ceiling than Hoyer, but I would argue a lower floor. Both are available in a sizable majority of fantasy leagues, so if you were counting on Stafford in Week 10, those are the two best options.
