UPDATE: Breida is getting a second opinion on his sprained ankle.
Week 10 Monday Night Football was a physical affair, with both the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks suffering a host of injuries. The 49ers lost running back Matt Breida to an ankle injury in the second half, and while he was announced as questionable to return, he did not make his way back the rest of the game.
Breida did not play for a sizable chunk of the second half, but still finished the game with the most touches among the running backs. He had ten rushes for 18 yards and two receptions for seven yards. Tevin Coleman had nine rushes for 40 yards and four receptions for 32 yards. Raheem Mostert had six rushes for 28 yards and a seven-yard catch. Mostert was getting work before Breida got hurt, but he became the primary complement to Coleman after Breida left.
Breida showed up on the practice participation reports with an ankle injury, but he was not on the final injury report. The ankle has been a problem for Breida for much of the past two seasons, and clearly is not something he has gotten past.
Fantasy football analysis: 49ers running backs
Mostert gains fantasy value if Breida cannot get ready in time for this coming Sunday against the Cardinals. Coleman remains the most valuable of the running backs, but Mostert would be useful if you’re short-handed without an Aaron Jones or Chris Carson in this week’s byes. It’s not a long-term play, and Breida has rebounded quickly in the past, so wait and see what we hear from Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday.
