How to handle Matt Breida’s injury in Week 12 fantasy football [UPDATE]

Breida is doubtful, so how should you handle the Niners’ running back situation this week? We break down the fantasy football implications for Week 12.

UPDATE: Matt Breida is INACTIVE.

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers will be without running back Matt Breida for the second week in a row. He is officially listed as doubtful on the Friday injury report as he continues to deal with an ankle injury. He did not practice at all this week, which means he is very unlikely to see the field this week despite the official sliver of hope.

Breida could be back in action next week, but keep an eye on the news before making any hasty decisions. More importantly, you had better get to know the other two backs on the roster who shoulder the load—Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert.

Coleman and Mostert are both going to get a lot of work this week. The 49ers are one the league’s leaders in how much they run the ball. Last week, without Breida, Coleman had an edge in carries over Mostert, 12 rushing attempts versus six. However, neither running back turned those carries into much yardage, combining for a grand total of just 17 yards. Coleman did catch three passes for 48 yards.

And, of course, running back Jeff Wilson scored a 25-yard touchdown on his one touch of day, always a frustration proposition for fantasy owners.

Still, Coleman and Mostert are both decent plays this week. The Packers secondary can smother a passing game, so the Niners will need to lean on Kyle Shanahan’s creativity in the running game. Coleman will have a slight edge, but both him and Mostert are going to see some work.
