Patriots sign kicker Kai Forbath

The Patriots have a new kicker and he’s an interesting fantasy football waiver wire option in Week 13.

You definitely don’t want to get an emergency surgery when Bill Belichick is your head coach! Well, at least not when you’re a kicker.

The New England Patriots released kicker Nick Folk on Friday after he had an appendectomy on Thursday. He could have returned in Week 14, but the team needs a kicker in Week 13, and so Folk got cut. The team has replaced him with Kai Forbath, according to Ian Rapoport. Forbath played three games for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season and has been a free agent since. He converted four of five field goals and three extra points in that time.

Forbath is available in all traditional fantasy formats, and if you’ve been streaming kickers this season, he’s worth a look. The Patriots face the Houston Texans in Week 13, and there should be a chance for plenty of scoring. Rapoport said Folk could be brought back once he’s healthy, so this might be a one-week option — but for the final weekend of your fantasy regular season, it could be a risk worth taking.
