The New England Patriots offense has suddenly become stagnant late in the season. The Patriots have failed to score more than 20 points in each of their past three games, and have a combined 30 points the past two weeks, which is low by their standards. Most of this is due to a lack of talent at the skill positions, no Rob Gronkowski and no wide receiver who can really stretch the field.
Plus, Tom Brady is getting old, ya know? Sony Michel normally leads the backfield in touches, with James White mixing in on passing downs. Rex Burkhead hasn’t really been a factor but is still seeing snaps.
Fantasy Football Analysis: New England Patriots running backs
So let’s take a look at last week, though Week 13’s matchup vs. the Houston Texans looks a lot better on paper. In Week 12 vs. the Dallas Cowboys, the Pats basically just clamped down on defense and were fine running the ball 27 times and feeding Julian Edelman all game. New England has been making too many mistakes on offense and Brady really hasn’t looked like himself much.
The Texans have allowed a lot of rushing yards over their past three games, 168 per game to be exact. Most recently they were torched by Marlon Mack and Jonathan Williams, and before that Lamar Jackson and Mark Ingram. Now, this lines up as a good spot for Michel. He had 20 carries last week and should get the bulk of the touches in Week 13. Because Houston isn’t a strong defensive team and has no pass rush, Brady should have all day to find White. Burkhead may even factor into the passing game. I like Michel given the game script. If the Pats want to play defense, running with Michel will be key to controlling the clock. If they go up big, Michel will be key to running out the clock.
