Texans-Titans game offers playoff implications in Week 15

The Titans and the Texans battle for AFC South supremacy.

The Titans and Texans face off in Tennessee this week and meet again in Houston in two weeks. A sweep by either team would insure a division championship and playoff spot but a split could end up pushing their division hopes to tie breaking scenarios and wild card possibilities.

The schedules favor the Texans slightly, as the Titans host the Saints while the Texans head to Tampa Bay in their other matchups. The Buccaneers have played well at times this season and if Jameis Winston is healthy, they could make it a game but I’d rather face the Bucs than the Saints with my playoff hopes on the line.

Houston is coming off a bad loss at home to the Broncos while the Titans have played extremely well, winning six of their last seven with Ryan Tannehill at the helm. Over the last month, the Texans were hosed 41-7 by the Ravens, then won big games against the Colts and Patriots to only lose to the Broncos in a rout. This division is anybody’s right now.

Whoever ends up second in the division has a chance to take the wild card spot from the Steelers or even the Bills. There are too many scenarios to go into all of them with three games remaining, but the Steelers face the Bills, Jets and Ravens to finish out the season. A win against the Bills helps their chances immensely and hurts whoever is runner-up in the AFC South. But the Texans currently hold the tiebreaker over the Steelers and would have a better shot at getting a wild card spot than the Titans. To get both teams in the playoffs from the South, the Titans coming in first gives them the best odds. So, if you are a Steelers fan, you should root for the Texans and if you are a Titans or Texans fan, you should root for the Bills and your own team to win and win and win.

Phew! Things could change drastically with some of these teams going on a flat out losing streak but for the most part we have three AFC teams vying for two spots that remain. It should be a fun race.
