Zion Williamson still “a ways away” from making NBA debut

Pelicans GM David Griffin confirms Zion is doing “fully weight bearing” workouts after return to practice Tuesday.

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson is still “a ways away” from making his NBA debut this season, GM David Griffin told reporters Tuesday.

Zion returned to practice Tuesday and was getting some shots up. He’s apparently also doing full weight workouts, which is a great sign. This isn’t all that surprising though. Williamson has been out for the past two+ months and was expected to return after 6-8 weeks, a window which has come and past.

The Pels are working him back slowly with no need to rush. So chances are Williamson probably could be playing right now if he weren’t such a prized prospect. We likely won’t see Zion debut on Christmas Day next week against the Denver Nuggets. But we should see Williamson hopefully back sometime early in the New Year.
