Best Week 17 DFS options: Jameis Winston or Patrick Mahomes

We look at two top DFS plays for this week and choose who should be in lineups.

UPDATE: Jameis Winston is ACTIVE.

There is no doubt that Patrick Mahomes ($7,200) is a better quarterback than Jameis Winston but the question we have here is, who is the better DFS play in Week 17? We already know that Winston is going to throw passes to the other team more often than any other quarterback but that doesn’t exclude him from being a top fantasy play. Here are their per game averages this season:

2019 Statistics: Patrick Mahomes vs. Jameis Winston

Player DKAvg Cmp Att Yds TD Int Sk RuAtt RuYds RuTD
Player DKAvg Cmp Att Yds TD Int Sk RuAtt RuYds RuTD
Patrick Mahomes 23.3 23.3 35.3 296.7 1.9 0.3 1.3 2.8 15.2 0.2
Jameis Winston 23.8 24.5 40.1 327.2 2.1 1.9 3.1 3.8 16.3 0.1

Winston makes up for his interceptions in fantasy by throwing more often and accumulating fantasy points. Mahomes gets his by being more efficient and not getting negative points from too many turnovers. Mahomes has also been injured off and on this season, which has knocked his numbers down.

The Buccaneers don’t have anything to play for other than to not have a losing record, which might be enough to get them up against a Falcons team that has played much better of late while the Chiefs need to win to stick to the No. 3 seed and give them a slight chance at a bye week.

Daily fantasy football analysis: Jameis Winston, Patrick Mahomes

I expect both Winston and Mahomes to play as long as they’re needed to get a win. Mahomes faces a Chargers team that has mostly given up but does have a good pass defense. Mahomes had a down game in Mexico City when these teams met last time and they’ve only allowed one quarterback to throw for over 300 yards and more than two touchdowns, both being DeShaun Watson back in Week 3.

Last week they did allow Derek Carr to complete 26-of-30 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers are the most completions and best completion percentage along with the second most passing yards they’ve allowed on the season. I believe Mahomes can put up big numbers on this defense at home but will they put up a fight?

Winston faces a Falcons defense that was absolutely roasted early in the season through the air but have somehow turned things around. They’ve given up just seven touchdown passes in their last seven weeks, whereas they allowed 19 in their first eight games. The thing is, Winston has three of those seven touchdowns, which he threw in Atlanta Week 12.

Last week Winston threw just one touchdown to four interceptions and noticeably had trouble without his two best receivers, Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, out. Mahomes looked great in Chicago, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another.

I want to go with Winston this week, as I think the game will be close and he will throw it 40+ times, but I his risk without Evans and Godwin is just too much for me, especially when Mahomes looks to be on his game.

Daily fantasy recommendation

Patrick Mahomes is the choice between these two top plays.
