Washington is out of wild card contention, but NOT NFC East contention

Washington is the longest of long shots to make the playoffs, but they have a slim opportunity.

The NFC East is a dumpster fire of a division right now. The Dallas Cowboys have lost two straight to drop to 6-6 but still hold a one-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys odds to win the division have actually improved in that time.

The Eagles host the Cowboys in Week 16, in a game that likely will determine the division champ. However, there’s one team that while we can probably write them off, we shouldn’t juuuuuust quite yet.

Washington sits at 3-9 and in third place in the division. They have been mathematically eliminated from either wild card berth, but thanks to Dallas’ losing streak, they remain alive in the NFC East race. DraftKings Sportsbook lists their divisional odds at +50000. By comparison, the Cowboys lead with -177 odds and the Eagles are second at +144. The Giants have been mathematically eliminated.

Washington opened the season losing nine of their first ten games. Head coach Jay Gruden was fired and Bill Callahan took over. He replaced starting quarterback Case Keenum with rookie Dwayne Haskins in Week 9. The team lost before and after their Week 10 bye, but has now won two straight against the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. Following the win over Carolina,

Washington travels to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 14. They seem to have little chance of winning that game, installed as 13.5-point underdogs. But why not keep hope alive a little bit longer? If Washington were to stun the Packers, their remaining schedule includes home games against the Eagles and Giants, and then a road game against the Cowboys. If Washington wins out, Dallas loses out, and the Eagles beat Dallas but lose their remaining games, Washington is your 2019 NFC East champion!
