How to approach betting on Trail Blazers vs. Clippers

Will Carmelo Anthony get shut down by the likes of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George? We take a look at how to approach betting on the game.

It’s the matchup we’ve all been waiting for: Carmelo Anthony and the Portland Trail Blazers (8-12) taking on Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers (15-6). But really, Melo is back and the Clippers are the toast of the Western Conference with Kawhi and Paul George teamed up. The Blazers are looking to get back into the playoff conversation with three straight wins, while the Clips are 8-2 in their past 10 games. Let’s break down the lines on DraftKings Sportsbook for the game.

Trail Blazers vs. Clippers spread, over/under, money line

Spread: Clippers (-9)
Over/Under: 231.5
Money line: Clippers (-435), Blazers (+340)

I think this game is going to be much closer than the spread indicates, but I’ve been wrong before (well, duh). The Blazers have some momentum and are playing better, plus have more talent with Melo looking like his old self. Damian Lillard needs to get right, but I think this is a spot where the Blazers can keep things close and cover. I’ll take the points. Portland has covered a 9-point spread in six of its past eight games.

This point total is really high. I think if the Blazers are going to keep it close and maybe pull off a win here, then things will go under. Melo plays more ISO ball and that may slow things down. But still, both teams are in the top 10 in scoring in the league, so it’s a tough call. I’d maybe fade the O/U and look to bet elsewhere. The Blazers at +340 seems like some value if you think they can pull it off, but Los Angeles’ money line isn’t giving me much. Sure, they could win, but at -435, everyone is expecting that. Maybe couple them with a dog in a parlay to boost the odds.

Prediction: Clippers 118, Trail Blazers 112

Carmelo Anthony player prop

I want nothing to do with the OVER for Melo’s point total of 15.5. Though, it is pretty low compared to what he’s been producing. He’d just have to chuck for most of the game, which seems likely, for him to hit this OVER. But he’ll have Kawhi and PG-13 on him most of the game I’d assume, which is as tough as things get. Somehow I flip-flopped on Melo’s point total in a matter of seconds. Melo +4100 to score the first basket? Have I gone insane? Probably.
