The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back an old friend to their backfield. The team signed running back Spencer Ware Tuesday evening as they begin Week 14 preparations, per Arrowhead Pride.
The move comes two days after running back Darrel Williams injured his hamstring in Week 13. That came after fellow back Damien Williams was inactive due to a rib injury suffered prior to the Chiefs bye week.
Kansas City returns to practice on Wednesday to prepare for their matchup with the New England Patriots. The addition of Ware would suggest both Williams’ are in question. The team has LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson in the backfield, with Thompson emerging as the starter once the second Williams went down.
Reid would want a third back if both Williams’ can’t play, and Ware could easily fill in that role. He knows the offense from his previous three years with the team, which means they don’t have to worry about getting him up to speed. And if Damien and/or Darrel is able to return for Sunday, they can cut Ware.
Fantasy football analysis: Chiefs running backs
If Damien and Darrel don’t play, Darwin Thompson appears in line to get the most touches. McCoy and Ware are worth tracking, but overall this is not a great running back situation. Stay away from it if you can, but if you’re short-handed, Thompson is the guy to own.
