The Ole Miss Rebels are finalizing a deal to make Lane Kiffin their next head coach, ESPN reported late Friday night. It appears Kiffin is close to returning to the SEC, zoning in on taking the vacant job at Ole Miss. He had finished his third season at Florida Atlantic, leading the Owl to a 9-3 record in 2019.
Kiffin was the former head coach at Tennessee and USC, also stopping in Alabama to be OC for Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide. This would be the fifth head coaching job for Kiffin, who has been under a lot of scrutiny throughout his career.
People tend to forget his brief stop in Oakland, coaching the Raiders in 2007 and 2008, combining to go a less-that-stellar 5-15 in that stretch before being fired. Things won’t be easy for Kiffin in the stacked SEC, but he does have a penchant for putting together great offenses and would have a leg up in recruiting given his reputation and previous stops.
