Editor’s update 11:57 p.m.: The Philadelphia Eagles improved to 2-2 with a win over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 4. The Packers dropped to 3-1 after Aaron Rodgers threw an interception in the end zone in the final minute of the game. The Eagles were four point underdogs and take home the outright win against the spread. The point total was 46.5 and this game blew past it with a final score of 34-27.
Carson Wentz came in under his passing yards (160) and completions (16) over/under totals, but he went over on touchdowns with three touchdowns on the game. The star of the game for the Eagles was Jordan Howard, who rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns, and also had three receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown.
There were several injuries in the game, with one notable being wide receiver Davante Adams. He injured his toe in the fourth quarter and did not return.
Editor’s update 1:21 p.m.: The Packers are favored by four as kickoff approaches, and the public continues to bet them heavily. As of noon on Thursday, 72 percent of handle and 69 percent of tickets bet have been on the Packers. The point total sits at 46.5, and the betting has been heavily for the over — 76 percent of the handle and 74 percent of tickets bet are on the over.
DraftKings also released a batch Superstar Matchup prop bets for Aaron Rodgers and Carson Wentz. You can bet on total touchdown passes, with over 1.5 installed at -162 for Rodgers and -139 for Wentz. The under is +130 and +110 respectively. Other prop options:
Player to throw most TDs: Rodgers -155, Wentz +124
Passing yards matchup: Rodgers -125, Wentz +100
Passing yards O/U: Rodgers 270.5, Wentz 274.5
Passing completions O/U: Rodgers 26.5, Wentz 21.5
Earlier in the week, I discussed the Packers’ shortened Super Bowl odds. I also discussed how difficult their path gets after a fairly easy Week 3 game against the Broncos. Which brings us this week’s installment of Thursday Night Football: Eagles vs. Packers. These storied franchises have competed against one another 43 times, 27 of which resulted in Green Bay wins. The Packers stand atop the NFC North with a 3-0 record, while the Eagles 1-2 start leaves them chasing the Cowboys in the NFC East. It’s this season’s first non-division matchup on Thursday night, and after three relatively slow games, fans will want this one to feature some offense.
So it will be music to those fans’ ears when they hear that Philadelphia’s defense has allowed the fourth-most passing yards (293.7 per game) in the league. Aaron Rodgers (DraftKings Showdown salary $10,800) has yet to surpass 235 yards in a game this season, so this will be a great opportunity for him to change that. Rodgers will continue to favor Davante Adams ($11,000 and 21 targets) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling ($7,600 and 22 targets,) with the former looking for his first receiving TD of the season. I’d anticipate both being heavily involved in the game plan.
The Packers are one of three teams which Carson Wentz ($10,000) has played and not thrown a touchdown against in his career. With the over/under set at 1.5 Wentz pass TDs, he’s expected to knock them off that list. The Eagles are four-point underdogs and could find themselves playing from behind for most of the game. I don’t see this turning into a shootout since the Packers have held their opponents to 11.7 points per game, only second to the Patriots. Alshon Jeffery ($8,200) will return after missing last week’s contest with a calf injury, so Wentz should benefit from having his WR1 back in the fold.
I’m taking the Packers to cover the spread. They’ve never lost a home Thursday game. Combining the Packers’ impressive defensive showings with the Eagles underwhelming start, I’m going to say that the Pack will remain undefeated on TNF at home. Watch for Jamaal Williams ($5,000) to get more usage if Green Bay decides to take it easy on a slightly banged up Aaron Jones ($9,000.)
