Kyle Allen to continue starting for Panthers, Cam Newton rehab timeline still TBD

Second year quarterback Kyle Allen will remain the Panthers starter with Cam Newton continuing to rehab his injured foot. We break down the fantasy football implications.

The Carolina Panthers will start quarterback Kyle Allen a third straight week in place of Cam Newton, and that won’t be changing anytime soon. Head coach Ron Rivera announced the news on Monday, according to Pro Football Talk, and has not offered a timeline for Newton’s return.

Newton has missed the past two games with a Lisfranc injury to his foot, aggravating an injury suffered during the preseason. The Panthers thumped Arizona 38-20 in Allen’s first start, and edged out Houston 16-10 this past weekend. Allen threw for four touchdowns against Arizona in a nearly perfect performance. He threw for 232 yards in his second start, but lost three fumbles.

Fantasy analysis: The fumbles will be something to track moving forward, but otherwise Allen has looked solid in place of Newton. Newton said he needs time to get healthy, but we’re left waiting for some unspecified time in the future. It’s not yet time to drop Newton in traditional fantasy leagues, but at some point fantasy owners might face a tough decision if they are dealing with a roster crunch.

The Panthers host a tough Jacksonville Jaguars defense in Week 5 that may or may not have Jalen Ramsey in the lineup. It’s a tough unit regardless, but his presence or absence would have a big impact.
