Week 1 for the 49ers marks the return of star(?) QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who tore his ACL back in Week 3 of 2018. Over the past two seasons, San Francisco has scored about six more points per game with Garoppolo at the helm, and 0.66 more points per drive. After tossing up a goose-egg in QB rating during his first pre-season appearance, the alarms were sounding loudly that Garoppolo may not be ready to return to the field, but he put those to bed after completing 70 percent of his passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in the Week 3 tuneup game. With new RB Tevin Coleman and a host of young WRs in the fold, this could be the breakout year people have been waiting for since Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017.
For the Bucs, Bruce Arians will make his return to coaching after a year off. He has a lot to work with offensively, as Tampa Bay ranked second in yards per pass attempt in 2018. However, Jameis Winston will have to prove that he can be the franchise QB the Bucs desperately need after turning the ball over 15 times in 11 games, and being benched multiple times in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Tampa will also need to be better on defense after ranking dead last in Football Outsiders DVOA in 2018. The team is hoping that rookies Devin White and Jamel Dean are able to lift up this unit.
