Fantasy, betting implications of Nick Foles broken collarbone

The Jaguars suffered a devastating injury in their ugly loss to the Chiefs. Nick Foles broke his collarbone and could be out up to three months. We break down the fantasy and sports betting implications.

The Jacksonville Jaguars thought they had a short-term answer at quarterback in Nick Foles. It took less than a quarter for those hopes to sink. Foles suffered a broken left collarbone after throwing a 35-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Chark. Foles chucked the ball up amidst tremendous pressure and suffered the consequence. Foles could be out for upwards of three months, although each injury timeline can be different.

Sixth round pick rookie Gardner Minshew replaced Foles and actually put together a nice little performance. He completed 22 of 25 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. The Chiefs’ defense is not remotely impressive, but Minshew deserves credit for stepping in and keeping the offense rolling. The Jaguars were thumped by the Chiefs, but Minshew offered at least a little bit of hope.

Fantasy impact: The Jaguars pass catchers were not viewed as great options, led by Dede Westbrook as the biggest upside guy. Minshew looked decent, but losing Foles is a big hit to all of their fantasy values. Running back Leonard Fournette gains some value since the Jaguars will need to protect Minshew with the run game, but loses some value in potentially facing eight-man boxes. Minshew is a non-factor in fantasy for now, but given how he performed against the Chiefs, he’s worth keeping on your radar if you need a streaming QB.

Betting impact: The Jaguars travel to face Houston in Week 2. The Westgate SuperBook released a look-ahead line that had the Jaguars a three-point underdog on Thursday. The Texans Monday Night Football performance could impact it to some extent, but even without factoring in MNF, we’ll likely see the line pick up at least a couple points.
