Jackson states that San Antonio doesn’t know whether to keep DeRozan and Aldridge or trade them before the Deadline on Feb. 6. The report also states that the Miami Heat could have interest in both DeRozan and Aldridge to add to a solid core of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.
The potential package Jackson states could feature expiring contracts, Justise Winslow, Derrick Jones Jr., and possibly rookie Kendrick Nunn. Right now, Winslow is injured and could be out the next week or so, which doesn’t bode well for his trade value. Goran Dragic could also be involved as an expiring, along with Meyers Leonard. The Heat are 28-12 entering Friday and in second place in the East. A move for DeRozan or LMA could push them into title contender territory.
As for the Spurs, well, they aren’t exactly the Gregg Popovich team of the past. Even so, the Spurs are 17-22 and on the cusp of the playoff picture in the West. They could fight for a meaningless playoff spot and lose in the first round to the Lakers or Nuggets or Clippers. Or they could have a fire sale and jumpstart a potential rebuild. Pop may not be about that life, but it may be for the best.
