The San Francisco 49ers have locked themselves in to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 54 by blowing out the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game. San Francisco has followed up a mediocre 2018 season by becoming one of the NFL’s most dominant teams. We took a look the the 49ers’ Super Bowl odds this year on DraftKings Sportsbook. This is how they’ve climbed.

The Middle of the pack

San Francisco didn’t start 2019 with the best Super Bowl odds, but they also were not scraping the bottom of the barrel. At +4000, they were considered average, despite having just finished 4-12 the previous season and having the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks as divisional rivals. But the 49ers started proving doubters wrong by getting off to one of the most impressive runs in the league.

Dismantling expectations

The 49ers won their first eight games of the season, but the questionable competition they faced early on kept their odds on the lower side. Victories against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cleveland Browns helped San Francisco move to +1600 ahead of Week 5. The 49ers then proceeded to topple the Rams, and Washington to finally dip below +1000. The 49ers were +900 before blowing out the Carolina Panthers in Week 9 and continued to better their chances until they took a step back for the first time of the year ahead of Week 14.

George Kittle’s big moment

San Francisco hit a bump in the road when they lost to the Ravens — who had the second best Super Bowl odds in the league (+350) — in Week 13. They had reached a season best +600 before falling short in Baltimore. But what came after that turned the season around. The 49ers faced the New Orleans Saints the following week in an overtime barn burner. Jimmy Garoppolo connected on a fourth-down pass to George Kittle, which he took from the 49ers’ 33-yard line to the Saints’ 28 yard line. That play set up kicker Robbie Gould’s game-winning field goal. San Francisco’s odds moved to a regular season high +500 following the win, helping them clinch the NFC West over the Seahawks. The 49ers won two of their next three games to close out the regular season.

The postseason

The 49ers trio of running backs — Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, and Matt Breida — helped them field one of the league’s best rushing attacks. That strength has powered the team through the playoffs so far. Coleman eclipsed the century mark in the Divisional Round but was overshadowed by Mostert’s 220-yard, four-touchdown performance in the NFC title game. Garoppolo’s passing numbers are declining, but the 49ers’ sturdy defense and consistent ground game has helped their odds reach +110 two weeks ahead of Super Bowl Sunday. They are considered underdogs against the Chiefs but have a real shot at hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after the final whistle.
