Underdog 49ers getting the betting support three days into the Super Bowl bye week

The 49ers are 1.5-point underdogs to the Chiefs, but the betting public is intrigued by them. We break down the Super Bowl 54 bye week betting splits on Wednesday.

The Super Bowl is 11 days away and we have our first look at how the betting public is approaching the game at DraftKings Sportsbook. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers have begun developing their game plans for next week, and will head down to Miami over the coming weekend. We’ll see the first practice and injury reports next week, but in the meantime, people are already starting to make betting decisions.

Point spread

The Chiefs opened as 1.5-point favorites and we have not seen any line movement to date. 67 percent of bets since Sunday have been on the Chiefs, but 78 percent of the handle (money bet) has been on the 49ers. Bets placed is useful to tell us the popularity of a given team, but handle is more helpful for determining confidence. If 10 people bet $10 on the Chiefs and one person bets $200 on the 49ers, KC would have a huge edge in bets placed while the 49ers would have the edge in handle.

Point total

The point total opened at 53 and climbed up to 54 on Tuesday. It likely won’t climb much more, but the betting split suggests room for a little more movement. 96 percent of the handle and 90 percent of tickets bet are on the over. The Chiefs have gone over their past three games, and the offense has looked incredible in their two playoff games. Meanwhile, the 49ers went over last week against the Packers and under the week before against the Vikings. Recency bias is having a huge effect on this betting.

Money line

The money line is fairly tight, with the Chiefs -122 favorites and the 49ers +108 underdogs. The Chiefs opened at -124 and the 49ers opened at +102, so we have not seen major movement to date. The betting public is backing the 49ers for now, with 55 percent of the handle and 63 percent of total bets on the underdogs.
