UPDATE 1/31: Tom Brady’s odds for his next destination have been updated, with the Raiders getting the biggest bump, from +2000 to +500. But, the most significant change is that his odds to go back to New England took a hit, moving from -335 to -250.
2020 is the first time in Tom Brady’s illustrious and long career that he will be a free agent. The 6-time Super Bowl winner has undoubtedly slowed down at age 42, but plans on continuing to play next season. DraftKings Sportsbook has odds on his next destination and the Patriots are the front-runner, especially after Robert Kraft says he plans on bringing Brady back, but that isn’t the end of the story.
Brady very well could want to move on to see what he can do with another team or Bill Belichick could want to move on from Brady. There are plenty of reasons to believe that Brady just might not be a Patriot next season. If he isn’t, who would be the best fit for a 42-year old quarterback of Brady’s ability?
Super favorite
New England Patriots, -335
New England doesn’t have a quarterback at the moment if they don’t re-sign Brady. Fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham is next in line and the odds that New England has him pegged as their quarterback of the future are long. The Patriots receivers are thin and Brady would likely want some reassurance that the team is willing to make moves to help them win again and soon, so I do think they’d need to court Brady to keep him around, but there’s always a chance for that seventh Super Bowl ring when Belichick is your coach.
Favorites, non-Patriots category
Los Angeles Chargers, +400
Nothing is official, but the Chargers and Philip Rivers are on the verge of parting ways. If they do, Brady would make sense for a franchise that is mired without a fan base in L.A. and in need of a quarterback. There are enough offensive pieces there to give Brady a chance to win, but the playoffs would not be assured. There is plenty of appeal for Brady if he wants to spend a year or two on the west coast to prove himself without Belichick overshadowing him.
Indianapolis Colts, +900
The Colts make a lot of sense as a team with a strong offensive scheme, offensive line and a need for a stop-gap quarterback that could help them win now. Jacoby Brissett showed well to start the season, as he managed the Colts offense, but he mostly fell apart at the end of the season, casting doubt on his ability to lead a team for a whole year and into the playoffs. Indianapolis isn’t a glamour spot by any means, but the fit is great and even at his advanced age, Brady would make the Colts a contender.
Mid-range odds
Las Vegas Raiders, +2000
The biggest thing going for the Raiders is their move to Las Vegas and them wanting to put butts in the seats and gain some momentum as they start a new era in the desert. Derek Carr isn’t the answer for the Raiders but he is capable enough to keep them competitive. If Jon Gruden and company believe Brady gives them a chance to make a run in the playoffs, they could shell out the cash and sell him on becoming the face of the Vegas Raiders.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, +2000
The Bucs have a good coach, two great receivers and a quarterback who just threw 30 interceptions. Jameis Winston has plenty of talent, but there is a real chance he’ll never beat his turnover ways and the Bucs are close to being a winning team with the right quarterback. Arians helped an older Carson Palmer put up some of his best seasons in Arizona and Brady is always looking to learn and improve his game, even at 42.
Longshot
Los Angeles Rams, +8000
It’s hard to feel strongly about any longshots, as teams aren’t going to choose a 42-year old over their young or established signal callers, but the Rams sure would be a fun spot for Brady to land. We know they have the horses on offense and a good offensive minded coach to win, but we also saw Jared Goff sabotage that group more often than allowable for them to even get back to the playoffs last season. If the Rams believe Goff can’t get it done for them, they could bring in Brady. It would be shocking, but crazy things happen.
