What to do with Ryan Tannehill in playoff fantasy football

The Titans have a chance to knock out the Patriots in the first round of the playoffs. Steve Buchanan breaks down the fantasy football implications for quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Prior to the Titans making a switch at quarterback in the middle of Week 6, they were 2-3 and on their way to a 2-4 record. Since Tannehill took over, the Titans went on to post a 6-3 record and find themselves in the Wild Card game against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Had it not been for the change at QB, the Titans likely wouldn’t be in this position, even if the matchup in front of them is daunting.

Since taking over the starter’s role, Tannehill has averaged 24.2 DKFP with at least two touchdowns thrown in all but one of the nine games he’s started. He’s also been active with his legs, rushing for over 20 yards in three games. With the way he’s emerged in this offense, it’s not crazy to think he could do some damage against the Patriots.

Fantasy Football Analysis: Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Tannehill

Looking at this matchup as a whole against the Patriots, it’s certainly not the best matchup to draw. During the regular season, opposing quarterbacks averaged only 12.8 DKFP and 199 passing yards, both of which were the lowest in the league. However, in the final two games of the season, during a time where the Patriots were not resting their staters, QBs Josh Allen and Ryan Fitzpatrick averaged 23.9 DKFP, 264 passing yards and threw three touchdowns. Not exactly shut down numbers from the league’s supposed top defense, right?

With this in mind, Tannehill has a legitimate chance to come into Gillette Stadium and make some serious noise against a Patriots defense that suddenly is struggling at the worst possible time for them. Even against a team that has allowed minimal production to the quarterback position in the Chargers, Tannehill, who was making his first start, scored 23.1 DKFP with two touchdowns and 312 passing yards. For reference, only three quarterbacks scored at least 20 DKFP against the Chargers, with Deshaun Watson and Derek Carr being the others.
