How and what to watch for Kentucky vs. No. 18 Tennessee

Kentucky’s defense had a great game last week, but Tennessee will prove to be a tougher challenge

The Kentucky Wildcats held Mike Leach and the Mississippi State offense to zero points last week to get their first win on the season. while the Tennessee Volunteers moved to 2-1 on the year after getting beat by Georgia. They face each other this Saturday.

Through the first two weeks of the season Tennessee had an extremely productive rushing attack, going for 365 yards and six touchdowns. They didn’t fare as well last week, getting a total of -1 yards against the best run defense in the nation, so it’s tough to see that happening again this week. The Vols passing game has been steady if not marvelous behind QB Jarrett Guarantano, who has four touchdowns and one interception this season.

Kentucky on the other hand has had virtually no passing game at all. They’ve thrown for just 224 yards total over the last two weeks. They can run the football well, but their season stats are misleading since they gained 408 yards against a suspect Ole Miss defense. The Wildcat defense had issues creating turnovers until last week. They got six interceptions against Mississippi State, but had zero picks or fumbles recovered before then. The Vols don’t cough up the ball much either, only giving up three turnovers through three weeks, and they were all against that UGA defense.

The Best Bet

The Wildcats rely on turnovers to score points, and that will probably be especially true against a solid Tennessee defense. The Vols don’t turn the ball over and haven’t coughed it up at all at home this season, so it could be a tough afternoon for Kentucky.

Pick: Tenn -6.5
