How and what to watch for Boston College vs. No. 23 Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech will have a new starter at quarterback, and Boston College is going in the right direction under Jeff Hafley. What can we expect from this matchup on Saturday night?

NCAA Football: Pittsburgh at Boston College Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

The No. 23 Virginia Tech Hokies will host the Boston College Eagles in a game between a pair of one-loss teams on Saturday night. This game will be competing against the Georgia-Alabama game in addition to Florida State-North Carolina, but it should be a compelling matchup.

Virginia Tech is coming off an incredibly high-scoring 56-45 road loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels. Quarterback Hendon Hooker missed the first two games but came on in relief of Braxton Burmeister, who started the first three of the season. Hooker has been named the team’s starting quarterback for its game against Boston College. In 10 games last season, Hooker completed 61.1% of his passes with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Boston College has been a pleasant surprise in its first season under head coach Jeff Hafley. Following a 6-7 season and the removal of Steve Addazio, Boston College is 3-1, coming off an impressive home win over the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday in overtime. Phil Jurkovec threw for 358 yards and three touchdown passes. He has gone for 300 passing yards or more in three of his four games as the starting quarterback for the Eagles.

Boston College won the last two meetings of this series including in 2019 when it won 35-28 at home.

The Best Bet

We’re going with the underdog. Virginia Tech will likely receive a bit of a bump at the quarterback position with the return of Hooker, but Boston College is a quality whose only loss game by four points against the North Carolina Tar Heels, who are ranked No. 5 in the country. There seems to be some life in this Eagles program that hasn’t been there in a while, and 13 is too many points.

Pick: Boston College +13
