Jets looking at historic point spread vs. Chiefs in Week 8

The Jets are bad and the point spreads are going up.

Will the Jets go winless?

The New York Jets are a bad football team with no sign they’ll be improving anytime soon. Coming off a 24-0 thumping at the hands of the Dolphins, the Jets are sitting at 0-6 and it’s hard to find a single win on their schedule.

The schedule does not get any easier anytime soon for Gang Green. Headed into Week 7, they host Buffalo, travel to Kansas City, and host New England before a Week 10 bye. They’ll be underdogs in all three games, but the point spread is going to get out of hand.

The Bills opened as 13 point favorites for Week 7 and it’s climbed to 13.5 at DraftKings Sportsbook. We don’t have numbers to bet on for Week 8 yet, but sportsbooks are offering lookahead lines. DK oddsmaker Johnny Avello provided a lookahead line for Jets-Chiefs in Week 8 and has the Chiefs as a 20-point favorite. The line won’t necessarily open at that this coming Sunday evening, but it gives us a benchmark for what we could expect.

Jets-Chiefs will not have the largest spread by a longshot, but it’s on the shortlist for biggest lines in recent memory. VSiN’s Ben Fawkes provided a look at spreads dating back to 1992 using the Westgate Superbook lookahead line.

That 2013 Jaguars squad was pretty awful with Chad Henne serving as the primary quarterback. They entered the game 0-5 and faced a 5-0 Broncos squad led by Peyton Manning in his second year with the organization. The Broncos won the game 35-16, failing to cover.

While the Jets could upset the Bills this weekend, odds are decent they are 0-7 headed into Week 8 against the Chiefs. Kansas City is 5-1 and traveling to face Denver this week. If they lose in Mile High, it’s possible the line opens at or just under 20, but a Week 7 Chiefs loss shouldn’t impact this line too much. It’s going to be a huge line regardless, and for good reason.

If you’re looking to wager on this game, keep an eye on what Ben noted: favorites are 1-5 in the games he cited. The Jets are an awful team, but 20 points is a whole lot to cover.
