How and what to watch for Nebraska vs. No. 5 Ohio State

Nebraska is not going to have a fun afternoon.

The Big Ten has returned, and the conference’s reigning champion gets to kick off their road to a repeat against one of the teams that has been near the bottom of the standings for a few years in a row. as the Ohio State Buckeyes start 2020 campaign against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The Huskers were a popular pick to contend in the Big Ten West last season, but they did not meet expectations at all. Junior QB Adrian Martinez had a sensational freshman year, but struggled in 2019. Head coach Scott Frost announced that Martinez would start this week, but the Huskers had success on the ground against the Buckeyes. They ran for 184 yards in their meeting last year, which was the most OSU gave up in the regular season and their leading rusher from last season, Dedrick Mills, is back. They still lost that game by 41 points however. Martinez will have to get the passing game going for Nebraska to have a chance.

While Martinez is trying to regain his form from 2018, Ohio State’s QB will look to build on an elite season from a year ago. Justin Fields is the best quarterback in the conference by a good margin. Just like the Buckeyes are the best team by a wide margin. The champs averaged 47 points per game and only scored less than 30 twice. Fields led the way with 41 touchdowns and just four interceptions.

This is the first game of the season, so crazy things can happen. Especially this year. But the bookmakers don’t think they will.

First games are never easy to pick, but if the Covid-19 season has taught us anything, it’s to err on the side of caution when hoping for an offensive explosion in a team’s first game.
