How and what to watch for Maryland vs. Northwestern

Maryland and Northwestern are looking to start the new year on the right foot after difficult 2019 campaigns.

Northwestern at Illinois

Opening the season against each other on Saturday are two programs that found themselves in the cellar of the Big Ten last year as the Maryland Terrapins will travel to Evanston to face the Northwestern Wildcats.

The 2019 NU offense was anemic for much of the campaign, failing to score more than 15 points in seven of their 12 contests. As a result, head coach Pat Fitzgerald has turned to Mike Bajakian as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator where Indiana starting quarterback Peyton Ramsey will man the contols.

Meanwhile in College Park, MD, there was about a two-week period where first-year head coach Mike Locksley’s UM offense looked terrifying before everything came crashing back down to earth as Maryland dropped nine of it last 10 contests. As the Terrapins enter year-two of the Locksley era, they’ll look to take a step forward with either Lance LeGendre or Taulia Tagovailoa, Tua’s younger brother, at QB.

Game Time/TV Channel/Streaming

You can watch Maryland vs. Northwestern Saturday, October 24th at 7:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network, and you can stream it via the Fox Sports app with a cable or streaming login, or with a BTNPlus.com account.

Point Spread, Totals, Odds, Trends

Point spread: Maryland at Northwestern (-12)
Point Total: O/U 53
Money line: Maryland (+335), Northwestern (-455)

  • Maryland has failed to cover the spread in each of its last six October games as a road underdog.
  • Each of Northwestern’s last six home openers have gone UNDER the total points line.
  • Maryland was 5-7 against the spread in 2019, Nortwestern was 4-8.

The Best Bet

Fitzgerald has made no mistake about his Northwestern teams being led by its defense and with pre-season All-Big Ten linebacker Paddy Fisher leading the way against a still inexperienced Maryland offense, this has the makings to be an ugly ballgame scoring wise.

Pick: Under 55
