Running back non-PPR rankings for Week 8 fantasy football

We take you through some of the best non-PPR running backs going in Week 8 for fantasy football, including a few viable streamers.

Final injury report

Out: Miles Sanders (knee), Aaron Jones (calf), Jeffery Wilson (ankle), Joe Mixon (foot), Devonta Freeman (ankle)
Doubtful: Mark Ingram (ankle), Carlos Hyde (hamstring)
Questionable: Phillip Lindsay (concussion), Dalvin Cook (groin), RB Damien Harris (ankle), Frank Gore (not injury related, hand), Chris Carson (foot), Travis Homer (knee)

Thursday injury report

We have an addition to the report on Thursday as Adrian Peterson was added as limited with an abdomen injury after not appearing on Wednesday. The Giants and Bucs had their first practices to start MNF week, and Devonta Freeman was a DNP with an ankle injury. All of Wednesday’s DNPs remained as such on Thursday and will all be worth watching on Friday.

Wednesday injury report

It’s a big name heavy injury report early in the week, and it’s not looking good for several of them. Mixon and Jones seem unlikely to play in Week 8, which means Gio Bernard and Jamaal Williams retain value for another week. Sanders is not entirely clear, but it would mean another opportunity for Boston Scott. If Ingram can’t play, it’s not clear whether Gus Edwards or JK Dobbins would get the bigger opportunity this week against the Steelers.

DNP: Miles Sanders (knee), Aaron Jones (calf), Mark Ingram (ankle), Joe Mixon (foot), Chris Carson (foot), Carlos Hyde (hamstring)
Limited: Josh Jacobs (knee), Kareem Hunt (ribs), Dalvin Cook (groin), Damien Harris (ankle)

The top-ten RBs of Week 7 couldn’t have represented the year 2020 any more fittingly. Of course, we had the elite Alvin Kamara and touchdown addict, Todd Gurley, but beyond that? Jeffery Wilson, James Robinson, Chase Edmonds, Jamaal Williams and Giovani Bernard dominated... just as we all had them ranked, right? If nothing else, Week 7 was a reminder of the importance of depth at the running back position and just how valuable a sturdy backup can be halfway through the season.

Injury news

Week 7 was yet another detrimental week for fantasy managers and their running back depth. Seahawks RB Chris Carson left Sunday’s contest early with what was later diagnosed as a mid-foot sprain. Playing in his absence were Carlos Hyde and Travis Homer, and wouldn’t you know it — they’re now injured too. Seattle will enter Week 8 thin at RB considering, making DeeJay Dallas an interesting potential flex play.

Kenyan Drake went down with an ankle injury versus the Seahawks which has been diagnosed as a high-ankle sprain. This could sideline him for several weeks, making Chase Edmonds a weekly RB2 with RB1 upside until his return.

The 49ers backfield also continues to highlight running back injury news, week by week. This time, it’s Jeff Wilson Jr. who finds himself placed on IR with a high ankle sprain. He had a buzz-worthy Week 7 performance in the absence of Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman, posting 120 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns on the day.

Continue to monitor word on Dalvin Cook, who returns from a bye week and some rest following a groin injury that held him out of the team’s Week 6 outing. Reports were encouraging that Cook should be good to go after the bye week. If he’s unable to play, Alexander Mattison again makes an intriguing play against a Packers defense allowing an average of nearly 150 scrimmage yards and 1.7 touchdowns per game to the running back position.

Joe Mixon managers will also need to keep an eye on his status, currently listed as week-to-week with a foot sprain. In his absence, Giovani Bernard assumed the bulk of the work. He didn’t get much done on the ground, averaging just 2.85 yards per carry against Cleveland’s run defense allowing the sixth-lowest yards per carry among NFL teams. He did manage a receiving TD and had plenty of work through the air, to finish his day at 96 scrimmage yards.

Bye weeks

Teams with a Week 8 bye include the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Football Team. James Robinson’s absence is sure to be noticed most significantly, as the workhorse ranks as the overall RB3 on the season. Also worth noting are RBs David Johnson and Antonio Gibson, each ranking top-18 among RBs in standard leagues.

We briefly discussed the injury news in Arizona up top, but in case you missed it, Kenyan Drake (ankle) will likely miss a few games, giving Chase Edmonds the chance to dominate. First, however, comes a week of rest.

Streaming options

Boston Scott, Eagles

We don’t yet have an injury update for RB Miles Sanders, who suffered a knee injury in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens. However, this week they’ll face the Cowboys, who don’t have a prayer of stopping much of anything — including the Eagles depleted offense. Scott totaled 15 touches for 92 scrimmage yards and a receiving touchdown, while the Cowboys are allowing an average of 162 scrimmage yards and a score. There’s room for a big day.

Damien Harris, Patriots

The Patriots offense was a complete and total disaster in Week 7, eventually landing Cam Newton on the bench while Jarrett Stidham closed out the game. Harris has averaged 5.8 yards per attempt in two of his three outings as a sophomore RB, and this week faces the Bills, who just allowed Frank Gore and La’Mical Perine to combine for 99 yards and a score on the ground. Harris could pay off as a flex play if given the carries.
