In one of the several middleweight bouts of UFC Vegas 12, Sean Strickland and Jack Marshman will meet on the preliminary card this Saturday live from Las Vegas and available on ESPN+.
Strickland will open as the heavy favorite with a 20-3 MMA record, and has both a height and reach advantage. The 29-year-old, who has just over a 12-minute average fight time, is 7-3 at the UFC level but hasn't fought since late 2018.
Once a welterweight competitor, Strickland did last a full 15 with the current UFC champion Kamara Usman. He can n both strike and grappler, with 4.34 significant strikes per minute and 1.37 takedowns per 15 minutes. “Tarzan” lands just 35 percent of his strikes but defends 64 percent of his opponents.
He’ll aim to regain momentum against the 31-year-old Marshman, who hasn’t fought since the middle of 2019. With a 23-9 record, “The Hammer” has struggled in the UFC posting just a 3-4 record. He lands 2.64 significant strikes per minute yet takes 3.54. He lands strikes at a 28 percent clip, but defends 57 percent. Marshman’s only notable opponent is #1 light heavyweight Thiago Santos.
One aspect of this fight to note is Marshman has previous fought up a weight class, while Strickland has been down one previously.
