In a battle of the birds, the Rice Owls will be taking on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET in Hattiesburg, MS. Rice is looking for their first win of the season, while Southern Miss is looking to rebound from a 56-35 loss to the Liberty Flames.

The Owls (0-1) kicked off their regular season last week against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. Rice had a chance to win, but their kicker pulled a Cody Parkey in the first period of overtime, and they lost 40-34 in double OT. Senior quarterback Mike Collins completed 51.4 percent of his passes for 242 yards, with four touchdowns and an interception.

Senior wide receiver Austin Trammell caught two of Collins’ four TD’s, part of his three receptions for 76 yards. Sophomore running back Juma Otoviano was the game’s leading rusher with 84 yards on 20 carries.

As for the Golden Eagles (1-4), they got absolutely lit up by the Flames. This season Southern Mississippi has either lost by a single point or been blown out by 10 points or more.

The Golden Eagles are also on their third head coach this season as interim coach Scotty Walden is reportedly set to become the new head coach at Austin Peay. Walden took over for coach Jay Hopson, who resigned after Southern Miss loss 32-21 to South Alabama in Week 1. Assistant Tim Billings will now take over for Walden.

Heading into Saturday’s C-USA contest, all eyes will be on freshman running back Frank Gore Jr., the son of the New York Jets running back. Gore had 79 rushing yards on 15 carries against Liberty last Saturday. This season, the 5-foot-8 running back has recorded 287 rushing yards on 61 carries and a touchdown.
