How and what to watch for San Jose State vs. New Mexico

The game was moved to San Jose due to the spread of Covid-19 in New Mexico.

We’ve reached Week 2 of Mountain West action and out in the Bay Area, the San Jose State Spartans will look to go 2-0 to start the 2020 season when hosting the New Mexico Lobos.

The game was originally set to be played in Albuquerque, but due to spread of COVID-19 in Bernalillo County in New Mexico, it was relocated to San Jose.

After a scoreless first half in last week’s season opener against Air Force, SJSU did just enough to pull away late for a 17-6 victory. After stints at Texas A&M and Arkansas, quarterback Nick Starkel had a nice debut for the Spartans by going 22-of-29 through the air for 226 yards, a pair of touchdowns and a pick. His favorite target was Bailey Gaither, who hauled in eight receptions for 110 yards.

Due to the aforementioned spread of coronavirus, the Lobos were forced to cancel their season opener against Colorado State last week. As a result, the San Jose State game will mark the official debut of Danny Gonzales, the former Arizona State defensive coordinator who took over for Bob Davie last winter.

It’s a former SEC quarterback manning the helm against a program undergoing a rebuild in a pandemic. The Spartans are back, and a moribund program this decade gets on a roll here.

Pick: San Jose State -13.5
