Week 9 of the college football season is upon us, which means we are that much closer to the Pac-12 and MAC playing meaningful games this season. But before we can think about those teams, we have to look at Saturday’s slate of games.
All eyes will be on the No. 1 Clemson Tigers as they play the Boston College Eagles at noon. The Tigers are coming into this ACC matchup without Heisman Trophy frontrunner and starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the ACC’s testing protocol, he has to isolate for 10 days and might be able to return for next week’s game highly-anticipated matchup against Notre Dame. Without Lawrence under center, Clemson will likely start freshman and five-star recruit quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. It should be interesting to see how the freshman performs in his first collegiate game. Here are a few other games to keep an eye on in Week 9.
Best game
It is officially Week 2 in the Big Ten, and they are already giving us Ohio State vs. Penn State. The No. 3 Buckeyes have won three-straight over the Nittany Lions and four out of their last five games. However, No. 18 Penn State is looking to change that and get their season back on track after losing in double overtime to Indiana last week.
Ohio State is coming into State College, PA, fresh off a 52-17 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields completed 95.2-percent of his passes for 276 yards, two touchdowns, and had 54 rushing yards with a touchdown. Penn State’s defense struggled with the mobility and playmaking ability last week of Penix Jr. and could find themselves in the same spot on Saturday night.
Sleeper game
The undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats (4-0) find themselves back in the sleeper game once again. Last week, the No. 7 Bearcats thrashed the then-No. 16 SMU Mustangs 42-13. Cincinnati junior quarterback Desmond Ridder had a fantastic performance, throwing for 126 yards and a touchdown, and rushing for a season-high 179 yards and three touchdowns.
They will need a similar outing on Saturday from him as the Bearcats are taking on the Memphis Tigers. Memphis (3-1) is currently riding a two-game winning streak, defeating Temple and UCF. In both of those contests, they scored 50 and 41 points, respectively. Tigers quarterback Brady White is a player to keep an eye on as he’s completing 64.8 percent of his passes for 1,375 yards, 17 touchdowns, and four interceptions.
Worst game
We’re going to go with No. 4 Notre Dame as they travel down south to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Remember, a couple of weeks ago, when Tech played Clemson and was completely outmatched? We could see the same scenario play out on Saturday afternoon with the Fighting Irish’s defense only giving up three points on the road.
Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book should have no problems as he looks to build off of his performance from last week against Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Tech’s QB Jeff Sims will be going through another trial by fire, facing this tough Golden Domer defense.
