UPDATE: Coach Adamd Gase says that Darnold is out this week with his shoulder injury and that Joe Flacco will start, per Charles McDonald of the New York Daily News.

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold isn’t expected to play against the Cardinals in Week 5, per Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News. Darnold landed hard on his shoulder on Thursday Night against the Denver Broncos and looked like he had suffered a significant injury, but was able to come back into the game. It appears he separated his shoulder and could possibly play this week, but the team wants to be cautious.

Sending Darnold back in, along with playing first round rookie Mekhi Becton despite him not being 100 percent, had fans and media questioning coach Adam Gase’s motives. Was he willing to risk injury to key pieces of the future to help save his job? With this Darnold decision, it appears the team is reigning in some reckless decision-making.

If Darnold indeed is out this week, veteran Joe Flacco will take over. At this point in his career, he makes for a capable backup, but his weapons will be limited.
