In a main-card event, Markus Perez will meet Dricus Du Plessis in a middleweight bout in UFC Fight Island 5, live from Fight Island in Abu Dhabi and also available on ESPN+ this Saturday.
In a division currently led by the undefeated Israel Adesanya, the up-and-coming 26-year-old Du Plessis will look to crack the top 15. 14-2 at the MMA level, Du Plessis will be making his much-anticipated UFC debut. With 16 bouts under his belt, De Plessis hasn’t had one go the distance. “Stillknocks” has nine submissions and five knockouts in his victory column, and the South African native has only had a handful of fights even reach the third round.
His opponent will be no pushover, and has five bouts with UFC experience. Perez came into the UFC with a perfect 10-0 record but is only 2-3 in the UFC. “Maluko” is a mixed bag as he averaged 1.08 takedowns per 15 minutes with just 26 percent takedown accuracy. However he’s also not the best striker, averaging just 2.75 significant strikes per minute yet taking 3.96. At 32, Perez will be making his first appearance of 2020.
This will be one of the closer bouts on the card, and in an unusual twist for the main card, a UFC rookie will be the early favorite.
