The 49ers travel to face the Seahawks in Week 8, and will look to build on a strong run of wins over the Rams and Patriots the past two weeks. Both wins were big, but now they face their rivals in what is usually an intensely physical matchup. The question then is, what do we make of Jimmy Garoppolo for fantasy football?
Fantasy Football analysis: 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo
The 49ers were stumbling headed into Week 6 against the Rams, and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was coming off a horrible performance. A week after completing 7 of 17 passes for 77 yards and two interceptions, Garoppolo put together his best performance of the season. He completed 23 of 33 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. He followed that against the Patriots by completing 20 of 25 passes for 277 yards, but threw two picks and no touchdowns.
Garoppolo has solid upside, but consistency remains a problem. He’ll make at least one awful decision each game. He runs an offense that has some upside for passers, but is built around a strong ground game. It makes for a difficult decision each week in fantasy football. He currently ranks 31st in fantasy points per game among quarterbacks.
The 49ers face a Seahawks defense that has been shaky at best. They rank dead last in fantasy points allowed to opponents and 30th in pass defense DVOA. Seattle ranks 9th against the run, so it will be interesting to see if Kyle Shanahan dials up more passing, or if he is confident in what his ground game can do against the Seahawks.
Fantasy Start/Sit Recommendation
Sit Garoppolo in most single-QB leagues. He’s got some upside against this defense in deeper leagues and two-QB leagues, but there’s too much inconsistency to justify a starting spot.
