What Week 8 means for the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft

The Jets are in command of the top spot in the 2021 NFL Draft order. Will that change this week?

No team is technically eliminated from NFL playoffs yet, but, come on, a few of these franchises are not fooling anyone. They’re in the race to the bottom, eyeing that chance to nail down the first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Here’s what the top six spots in the draft order look like so far this season. Strength of schedule is the first tiebreaker for teams with identical records. Hat tip to Tankathon for providing that. Each team’s Week 8 opponent is listed as well.

  1. New York Jets: 0-7 (.000) — @ Chiefs
  2. New York Giants: 1-6 (.143) — vs. Buccaneers
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars: 1-6 (.143) — BYE
  4. Houston Texans (Dolphins hold pick) : 1-6 (.143) — BYE
  5. Minnesota Vikings: 1-5 (.167) — @ Packers
  6. Cincinnati Bengals: 1-5-1 (.214) — vs. Titans

Still winless, things are unlikely to change this week for the New York Jets who face the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are 20-point favorites, and that feels a little generous, to be honest.

While the Jets are the league’s only winless team, there are five one-win teams—the Bengals, Giants, Jaguars, Texans, and Vikings. Both Jacksonville and Houston are on a bye this week. As for the others, they’ve all got some tough matchups this weekend. The Bengals are touchdown underdogs to the Titans. The Giants are 13-point underdogs to the Buccaneers. The Vikings have the best odds of any; they’re six-point underdogs.

Looking ahead, the silver lining for the Jets is that they have the easiest remaining schedule, according to Football Outsiders adjusted measurements. The Jaguars have the hardest schedule left to play.
