Report: Gardner Minshew out for Week 9

Gardner Minshew is out for Week 9, and Jake Luton or Mike Glennon will fight for the start.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew won’t be able to play when his team returns from the bye for Week 9, per NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport. Minshew is dealing with a thumb injury that the team would like to get right rather than have him play through the pain.

Minshew has been inconsistent this season, which has caused some speculation about him being benched for Mike Glennon or rookie Jake Luton. The hope is that Minshew’s thumb has contributed to his inconsistency rather than the team coming up with an excuse to bench Minshew.

Rapoport reports that Glennon and Luton will compete for the starting job next week, but there’s good reason to believe that Minshew is going to be the best option overall. But, there Luton is the wildcard, as we’ve seen just how bad Glennon is and nobody wants to see that again unless he’s somehow been transformed into a good quarterback.
