How and what to watch for FAU vs. FIU

FAU’s defense is playing at a top-five level in 2020.

NCAA Football: Boca Raton Bowl-Southern Methodist vs Florida Atlantic Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

On Friday we’ll get the first Shula Bowl of the Willie Taggart era as the Florida Atlantic Owls head down to Miami to take on the FIU Panthers on Friday night.

FAU’s defense has been playing outstanding so far in 2020, allowing just 11.5 points per game to its opponents. The Owl offense has been underwhelming though, failing to score more than 24 points in any game. Their main point of attack is on the ground, with two rushers, Malcolm Davidson and James Charles, both over 150 yards on the season.

FIU’s offense has been competitive, and their record is deceiving. The Panthers lost by just two points to No. 22 Liberty. But the defense has struggled, allowing over 30 points twice so far on the young season. Like the Owls, FIU is bolstered by a strong rushing attack. Running back D’vonte Price averages more than 100 yards per game and has three scores on the year. The defense has allowed over 200 yards on the ground, which is a big mismatch against a very good Owls run game.
