How and what to watch for East Carolina vs. No. 7 Cincinnati

This game shouldn’t be particularly close, as the Bearcats look to roll through the American Conference.

The 6-0 Cincinnati Bearcats look to remain undefeated as they welcomes the 1-5 East Carolina Pirates to Nippert Stadium on Friday night.

The Bearcats are a team built on defense. They allow a mere 11.7 points per game, and they’re doing it against very good offenses as well. In the last three weeks alone, UC has held Houston, Memphis and SMU to less than 14 points each. The defense is led by the secondary, which concedes just 205 yards passing per outing, and under 100 yards on the ground. ECU’s offense isn’t particularly good and hasn’t faced a defense half as good as the Bearcats so far in 2020. The Cincinnati offense has come alive over the last three weeks, averaging 43 points per game behind quarterback Desmond Ridder.

East Carolina was supposed to take a step forward this year under second-year head coach Mike Houston, but it hasn’t clicked as of yet. The defense allows close to 40 points per game. The offense has improved, and they were robbed of a win by the officials at Tulsa earlier this season, but they shouldn’t be any match for an elite Cincy defensive unit.

The Best Bet

Three weeks ago, this game had the under written all over it. We know ECU will have a tough time against the Bearcats. But thanks to QB Desmond Ridder taking it to another level over the last few weeks, 55 isn’t an unreasonable total for this matchup.
