Last weekend, Notre Dame hosted the No. 1 ranked Clemson Tigers and came away with a 47-40 win in double overtime. Senior quarterback Ian Book delivered a memorable performance as both a passer and runner while running back Kyren Williams did much of the heavy lifting with a 140-yard, three-touchdown performance on the ground. The Irish’s combined efforts knocked off a Tigers squad that, while diminished by the absence of signal-caller Trevor Lawrence, still possesses one of the most talented and deep rosters in the country.
While that game sets Notre Dame up well for a spot in the College Football Playoff, Boston College has a history of pulling the upset under similar circumstances. Back in 1993, the Eagles faced off against the Irish one week after the latter’s 31-24 victory over the No. 1-ranked Florida State Seminoles. Boston College narrowly edged out a 41-39 victory, ruining an undefeated season as well as Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz’s shot at a third national title.
The 2020 iteration of Boston College has the firepower to potentially down Notre Dame again. Quarterback Phil Jurkovec has played steadily this season, completing over 62% of his passes for 2,083 yards, 15 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. Jurkovec has added another 96 yards and three touchdowns as a runner. His primary targets, wideouts Zay Flowers and tight end Hunter Long, have combined for 1,101 of those yards and nine touchdown receptions. Still Notre Dame offers the greatest challenge yet to that offense.
