How and what to watch for UNLV vs. San Jose State

San Jose State is looking for its best start since 1955 against a rebuilding UNLV team.

The San Jose State Spartans are putting together an incredible start to their 2020 season as they get set to host the UNLV Rebels on Saturday night.

San Jose State started its season with a 3-0 record and is coming off an impressive 28-17 road win over San Diego State last Friday night. In that game, Nick Nash took over for an injured Nick Starkel and completed 16 of 25 passes for 169 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also led the team in rushing with 53 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.

UNLV knew it would take a while to get the program turned around, and it’s been a slow process so far this season. The Rebels are coming into this game with an 0-3 record, and their closest loss came last weekend when they were beaten by Fresno State 40-27 at home. UNLV led midway through the second quarter and tied it at 27 in the third quarter before the Bulldogs pulled away. Max Gilliam completed 15 of 31 passes for 160 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also led the team in rushing with 139 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown.

UNLV won the last game of this series 38-35 at home in 2019.

The Best Bet

It remains to be seen whether Starkel will return from his injury forcing Nash to start, but it won’t matter. San Jose State will continue to roll, and UNLV is nowhere near good enough to keep this game close. UNLV has lost its games this season by a total of 28, 18 and 13 points. A blowout is coming as the Spartans will move to 4-0 for the first time since 1955.

Pick: San Jose State -15.5
